Near-city bar op­tions con­tinue to flour­ish in Sydney and the lat­est is Whirly Bird in Union Street, Pyrmont, opened by for­mer Key­stone Group fig­ure An­thony Prior.

A bar and diner fo­cus­ing on cock­tails and share plates fea­tur­ing fine poul­try, Whirly Bird’s aim is “ca­sual el­e­gance” in a multi-func­tion space that can seat 150 and in­cludes a 12-per­son pri­vate din­ing area as well as bar, lounge and out­door ar­eas.

The menu in­cludes sig­na­ture ro­tis­serie spit roast birds or killer but­ter­milk fried chicken paired with one of two sauces – chilli and honey caramel, or house-made Whirly­bird smoky BBQ. The list also in­cludes vege­tar­ian and ve­gan op­tions such as ‘salt ‘n’ pep­per silken tofu’ with spring onions, gin­ger and ponzu.

Cock­tails are the drinks fo­cus, cre­ated by Rollo An­der­son and Liam Do­herty-pen­zer with a mu­sic history theme, but there are also clas­sic and craft beers and a wine list with all op­tions avail­able by the glass.
