STAND-UPS & SIT-DOWNS
Jerry Before Seinfeld ( NETFLIX)
If you missed his recent Australian tour, here’s Seinfeld returning to New York’s The Comic Strip, where he got his start at an open mic in 1976. In an autobiographical set he recreates the early routines that took him from being a nobody to a 1981 slot on Johnny Carson, the gags interspersed with a visit to his old home and early stand-up footage. But how did he go from Carson to Seinfeld? No doubt that’ll be the subject of another Netflix special.
Dave Chappelle: The Age Of Spin ( NETFLIX)
Performing in LA for the first time after a decade out of the spotlight, Dave Chappelle proves he’s still one of the funniest mofos on the planet. Building his routine loosely around the four times he met O.J. Simpson, Chappelle tramples into no-go zones to unload about the Oscars, racist cops, LGBTIQ issues, Bill Cosby, rape and wicked rapper weed. It’s a seamless flow from a storyteller who takes no prisoners and knows no boundaries.
Louis CK: 2017 ( NETFLIX)
Whoa, man. Rivalling Chappelle in the un-pc stakes, Louis CK starts his latest stand-up show with, “So, y’know, I think abortion is…” What follows is a gut-busting, head-nodding comic overview of the pretzel logic and emotions involved in this one issue. And Louis is just getting warmed up for a set that ranges from religion (“The Christians won everything – if you don’t believe me: what year is it?”) to the truth about relationships (“Love plus time minus distance equals hate”).
H Between Two Ferns H With Zach Galifianakis ( AMAZON)
Zach Galifianakis’s satire of American talk shows is the crème de la crème of the comic offerings from Funny Or Die on Amazon. These 20 episodes from 2008-2016 feature the bearded master of inappropriate antagonism bewildering his celebrity guests with ridiculous questions, awkward asides and surreal non-sequiturs. The real gems are Galifianakis’s take-down of Hillary Clinton and him being taken down by Barack Obama.
