Winter may not be exceptionally cold in Tasmania, but it is rather long, isn’t it? As we head into what promises to be another chilly weekend, the harbingers of spring are already tantalising us, though. Our chief photographer, Richard Jupe, was treated to a joyful display of blooms when he arrived to photograph today’s cover at the Claremont spring flower show. Our columnists keep a particularly close eye on seasonal changes. Charles Wooley, of course, has highland trout lakes permanently on his mind. Last week, our bird man Don Knowler shared his exploration of the seasons over a year on kunanyi/Mt Wellington. And this week, gardening columnist Jennifer Stackhouse revels in the season, starting with artist Michael McWilliams’ beautiful garden at Perth. Our annual planting guide expertly compiled by Jennifer is designed to pull out and put on your fridge or wall (p12-13). We hope you find inspiration, too, in our feature on the benefits of decluttering, reorganising and generally getting a grip on the homefront.
