WORKHORSES SHINE OVERALL

Mercury (Hobart) - Motoring - - NEWS - Joshua Dowling

UTES were again the driving force in June, the biggest month of the year for new vehicle sales — and workhorses. The battle for top-selling ute status remains heated, with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger once again topping the charts across the entire market.

Heavy discounts on both the HiLux SR5 and Ranger XLT over the past two months saw record sales for the Ranger, with more than 5000 deliveries, including 4449 four-wheel-drive variants. This was enough for Ranger 4x4 to outsell the HiLux 4x4 — but the HiLux still led the month and leads year-to-date because sales of the two-wheel-drive HiLux push it ahead of Ford.

The score for the first six months of this year when all variants are combined: 23,378 (HiLux) versus 21,638 (Ranger). Meanwhile the Mitsubishi Triton sold well in June (2900) but it has done better. The Holden Colorado’s tally of 2400 looks modest next to the big two but this was the Colorado’s best monthly result to date.

Nissan Navara sales also picked up (2268) but it’s still nowhere near its former glory. Expect sharp deals to continue as Toyota and Ford continue to scrap at the top of the market, which in turn will force more affordable rivals to also sharpen their pencils.
