Us­ing phones in cars a killer

DRIV­ERS us­ing a mo­bile phone were in­volved in crashes that killed the equiv­a­lent of one per­son ev­ery 10 days last year.

Some 35 deaths were recorded in Bri­tish ac­ci­dents for 2016 where a driver be­ing dis­tracted or im­paired by their phone was a con­trib­u­tory fac- tor, up from 22 deaths in 2015.

A fur­ther 137 road users were se­ri­ously in­jured in such in­ci­dents, ac­cord­ing to Depart­ment for Trans­port fig­ures. Pedes­trian deaths saw the largest year-on-year rise at 10 per cent, fol­lowed by car oc­cu­pants (8 per cent).
