Man faces child sex charges interstate
AN alleged Tasmanian paedophile has been extradited to New South Wales on child sex charges.
The man was man arrested earlier this week in George Town, north of Launceston.
In 2013 NSW police launched an investigation after reports the man sexually assaulted a young girl several times between 2009 and 2012 in the state’s Hunter Region.
When inquiries failed to locate the man, an arrest warrant was granted in 2016.
Police traced him to northern Tasmania.
The 48-year-old was arrested at George Town Police Station on Tuesday.
Child Abuse Squad detectives travelled to Tasmania and gained an extradition order in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
NSW officers escorted the man to Newcastle Airport yesterday and took him to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where he was charged with five counts of sexual intercourse with a child between 10 and 14.
The man was refused bail and the case continues.
