Man faces child sex charges in­ter­state

AN al­leged Tas­ma­nian pae­dophile has been ex­tra­dited to New South Wales on child sex charges.

The man was man ar­rested ear­lier this week in Ge­orge Town, north of Launce­s­ton.

In 2013 NSW po­lice launched an in­ves­ti­ga­tion after re­ports the man sex­u­ally as­saulted a young girl sev­eral times be­tween 2009 and 2012 in the state’s Hunter Re­gion.

When in­quiries failed to lo­cate the man, an ar­rest war­rant was granted in 2016.

Po­lice traced him to north­ern Tas­ma­nia.

The 48-year-old was ar­rested at Ge­orge Town Po­lice Sta­tion on Tues­day.

Child Abuse Squad de­tec­tives trav­elled to Tas­ma­nia and gained an ex­tra­di­tion or­der in the Launce­s­ton Mag­is­trates Court on Wed­nes­day.

NSW of­fi­cers es­corted the man to New­cas­tle Air­port yes­ter­day and took him to Ray­mond Ter­race Po­lice Sta­tion, where he was charged with five counts of sex­ual in­ter­course with a child be­tween 10 and 14.

The man was re­fused bail and the case con­tin­ues.
