Blaze destroys warehouse

A VACANT two-storey Moonah property which burst into flames yesterday afternoon has been completely destroyed.

The inferno at the brick warehouse in Charles St broke out just after 3pm amid windy conditions.

A Moonah business next door was forced to evacuate.

Fire crews arrived to find the building fully engulfed, and took about an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control.

Brian Hevey, who runs next door’s Handa Solutions, said it was a close call for his building.

“Our building was absol- utely definitely threatened. It was time to worry because the building next door is two sto- reys and the flames were blowing horizontally,” he said.

“We’ve had to evacuate our premises, cancel out activity for this afternoon but we got everyone out OK.”

A fire watch was established at the property and an on-site examination is expected to completed today by the Tasmania Fire Service and Forensic Services. An investigation into the cause will continue this morning.

Anyone with information about the fire or who observed anyone in the area at the time is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
