THE il­le­gal sale of African ivory in Laos is surg­ing even as neigh­bor­ing China phases out its le­gal mar­ket, high­light­ing the chal­lenge of curb­ing traf­fick­ing across por­ous bor­ders, a green group said yes­ter­day. The num­ber of Chi­nese re­tail­ers selling ele­phant ivory in­creased sig­nif­i­cantly be­tween 2013 and 2016, says a re­port by Save the Ele­phants, a Kenya-based con­ser­va­tion group. AP
