Let’s party like it’s 1929

SWING into the New Year to celebrate Taste of Tasmania’s 30th birthday with a line-up of Aussie musicians that will transport you to the opulent Great Gatsby era.

Taste Festival organisers have lured an array of top Aussie musicians to help Hobart ring in the New Year at the Speakeasy Ball on New Year’s Eve at Princess Wharf.

The night features a stellar 10-piece band, led by ARIAwinning composer and pianist, Barney McAll, and guest singers including: headline act Tex Perkins, Ella Hooper from Killing Heidi fame, Monique Brumby, Mojo Juju and Loretta Miller from Jazz Party.

The fun doesn’t end there with fan favourites Mighty Duke And The Lords returning, Jazz Party, Uncle Gus and The Rimshots, Django’s Tiger and Saucy Jack and his Ripper Band all looking to help Hobartians take a step back through time.

Festival director Brooke Webb wanted to overhaul this year’s festival and believed the 1920s-themed party was the perfect backdrop to get everyone roaring and swinging into 2019.

“There is something so opulent, decadent, classy and festive about that Great Gatsby era,” she said.

Yesterday, Perkins gave Hobartians a taste of what was to come with a pop-up gig at Lark Distillery delivering a smooth rendition of Nina Simone’s classic Felling Good among other classics.

Perkins says festival organisers made him an offer he could not refuse.

“I don’t get a chance to get into jazz as much but when I’m given the chance I certainly do and will,” he said.

McAll said the event would serve up well-known singers performing classic songs in a speakeasy 1920s style.

“Mojo Juju will be doing some Michael Jackson songs in a big band style,” he said.

After returning from three hugely successful back-toback American tours inter- nationally acclaimed dancer and 2014’s Miss Burlesque Australia Zelia Rose will also perform a dazzling high-energy show.
