Volk­ers to face trial over sex charges

FOR­MER top Aus­tralian swim­ming coach Scott Volk­ers has been com­mit­ted to stand trial over a string of al­leged his­tor­i­cal child sex of­fences.

The prom­i­nent in­struc­tor is fac­ing five counts of in­de­cent treat­ment of girls un­der the age of 16. Volk­ers is ac­cused of in­de­cently deal­ing with two girls in Bris­bane dur­ing the 1980s.

The swim­ming coach ap­peared in Bris­bane Mag­is­trates Court yes­ter­day where he was com­mit­ted to stand trial.

He did not en­ter a plea and made no com­ment as he left.

Volk­ers was orig­i­nally charged in 2002 but the al­le­ga­tions were later dropped. Queens­land’s child abuse and sex­ual crime group re­opened the case in 2017 fol­low­ing the Royal Com­mis­sion into In­sti­tu­tional Re­sponses to Child Sex Abuse. Volk­ers will stand trial in the Bris­bane Dis­trict Court at a later date.
