Greens’ bid for Nelson
LOYAL Green Deborah Brewer has been chosen to run for the party in the Legislative Council seat of Nelson.
Ms Brewer has previously run for the Greens in Franklin in the 2010 state election, and said she was inspired to put her hand up again to ensure a parliamentary focus on climate change and Tasmania’s young people.
“For me, it’s important there’s a Green voice in the Upper House because with climate change at the moment I think it’s critical that we start to ensure that we have a climate change lens on all legislation that comes through,” Ms Brewer said.
“I’m also passionate about education and about social justice issues and housing and affordable housing, even responding to the transport issues that we’re facing at the moment at a local level.
“For me, standing for the Greens is standing up for a future — a future that is going to be for everybody, but particularly for young people in Tasmania.”
Ms Brewer has just submitted her PhD thesis looking at youth-at-risk and ensuring young people have opportunities in education. Greens leader Cassy O’Connor said Ms Brewer would be an “outstanding addition” to the Legislative Council.
