Fires held off in Perth
A SHED has been destroyed and several cars burnt out, but the threat from a bushfire that forced evacuations in Perth’s southeast has eased after firefighters battled to contain the blaze.
An emergency warning issued about noon on Thursday was downgraded to a watchand-act alert for parts of Banjup, Forrestdale, Harrisdale and Piara Waters yesterday.
About 200 firefighters worked to save homes in the area in winds gusting up to 90km/h.
The blaze is stationary but not yet under control, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warns.
“It’s been a fantastic effort of the firefighters to prevent any further property loss,” acting chief superintendent metropolitan Stuart Wade said.
Premier Mark McGowan said they did a magnificent job and risked their lives.
Winds of 80km/h were expected overnight, so residents are urged to remain vigilant and ready to act.
