Call a poll on height limits

-

SUPPORT for Anna Reynolds’ call for medium-density housing infill in the CBD highlights the need to resolve the issue over highrise (“Council must fix message,” Editorial, February 6). The public is concerned but the council has not developed its position. The democratic solution is an electors’ poll that gives a choice on height limits. This should be expressed in metres and storeys eg, 60 metres equals about 20 storeys, 45m about 15 storeys, etc. Electors should be given six heights from, say, six to 20 storeys. Of course any development needs to comply with normal requirements such as not overwhelming heritage buildings, quality of design, etc. On economic grounds alone, the city’s character must be protected and hopefully enhanced by good quality development. A poll should be able to give certainty to council, developers and the community.
