MAIDA Vale Primary School students are set to become better creative writers after teachers attended a Seven Steps to Writing Success workshop last month.

Designed by author and former teacher Jen McVeity, the program has been shown to raise national test scores (NAPLAN) by 10 to 30 per cent in less than a term.

“In schools, a lot of academics have got hold of the curriculum and are telling people to write in formulaic ways,” Mrs McVeity said.

“But if you use author skills, students are able to grab a reader’s attention from the begin- ning.”

Maida Vale teachers Susan Chappell, Wendy Meikle, Michael Munninger, Anna Simmons, Kerri Woods, Wendy Ball and Julie Buchanan.
