The school used do­na­tions of mulch on its gar­dens and any trees that had to be re­moved for safety rea­sons were mulched.

Trees in its bush­land that had to be lopped were left to rot as “habi­tat trees”.

“The whole thing is try­ing to in­stil in our stu­dents to con­trol what they pur­chase at source,” Mr Du­rant said.

“For ex­am­ple, buy­ing ap­ples and putting them in your bag, in­stead of pur­chas­ing them in a foam tray cov­ered in Glad wrap.

“So you have the least amount of rub­bish.

“It’s a mes­sage to the school and the wider com­mu­nity through the par­ents.”
