Lad­der bat­tle heats up as fi­nals loom

SU­BI­ACO and South Fre­man­tle con­tin­ued their win­ning streaks in Round 19 of the WAFL on Satur­day with East Perth mov­ing within a game of fifth po­si­tion and Swan Districts also draw­ing closer to re­plac­ing Peel Thun­der in third.

All four Round 19 WAFL matches took place on Satur­day af­ter­noon as po­si­tions to both make the fi­nals and in­side the top five heats up as the end of the sea­son ap­proaches.

Swan Districts not only con­sol­i­dated their fi­nals po­si­tion but moved closer to claim­ing third spot as well com­ing from be­hind to de­feat Peel Thun­der 11.6 (72) to 8.8 (56). Peel re­mains only in third ahead of Swans now via per­cent­age.

West Perth then had the chal­lenge of re­vers­ing its re­cent strug­gles against South Fre­man­tle but it wasn’t to be with the Bull­dogs win­ning 20.6 (126) to 11.13 (79) at Fre­man­tle Oval.

It’s a sixth straight win for South Fre­man­tle this sea­son and a sixth straight against West Perth as the Bull­dogs move fur­ther clear in sec­ond po­si­tion. West Perth re­main­fifth but just a game ahead of East Perth who they play next Satur­day at HBF Arena.

Su­bi­aco had lit­tle trou­ble mak­ing 16 straight vic­to­ries tak­ing care of East Fre­man­tle 19.8 (122) to 11.6 (72) at East Fre­man­tle Oval. The Lions im­prove to a 16-1 record as a re­sult while the Sharks slip to 214 and re­turn to the bot­tom of the lad­der on per­cent­age.

The fi­nal game of the round was at Clare­mont Oval and it al­ways loomed as a tremen­dous con­test with Clare­mont and East Perth fight­ing to stay in the fi­nals race.

Lit­tle sep­a­rated the two teams all day but a late goal to East Perth ruck­man Scott Jones was enough for the Roy­als to hold off Clare­mont to claim the thrilling 11.8 (74) to 10.10 (70) win.

The dif­fer­ence from a win and loss was mas­sive for both teams. East Perth im­proves to 7-9 with the win and will be in the top five with a win over West Perth next Satur­day. Clare­mont slips to 6-10 to be two games still out­side of fifth po­si­tion with four matches left.
