Hand in firearms
OWNERS of unlicensed firearms can hand in illicit weapons without fear of prosecution as part of a police amnesty.
Acting Commissioner of Police Gary Dreibergs said people could surrender unlicensed weapons at their local police stations.
The owner will have the option to licence the firearm where appropriate, sell it or have it destroyed.
A similar national campaign in 2013 resulted in 1281 firearms and about 80,000 rounds of ammunition being surrendered.
“That’s 1281 guns off our streets, which is a great result for the community and for our officers,” Mr Dreibergs said.
