Man re­manded over at­tempted mur­der

A SAWYERS Val­ley man ac­cused of us­ing a shovel in an at­tempt to mur­der a Fin­nish na­tional is due to reap­pear in court next month.

Matt Lewis Whit­taker ap­peared in Stir­ling Gar­dens Mag­is­trate Court last Wed­nes­day via video link from Hakea Prison charged with at­tempt­ing to kill over the July in­ci­dent.

The 36-year-old al­legedly hit a 33-year-old man from Fin­land with a car on July 28 near Paulls Val­ley on the Bib­bul­mun Track.

It is fur­ther al­leged that Mr Whit­taker then hit the man, who was with a 33year-old Fin­nish woman, with a shovel and caused a sig­nif­i­cant head wound.

Charged with at­tempted mur­der, Mr Whit­taker ap­peared in the Mid­land Mag­is­trates Court in July when Mag­is­trate Martin Flynn ad­journed the mat­ter to Au­gust. He was re­manded in cus­tody and reap­peared in front of Mag­is­trate Jan Whit­bread on Wed­nes­day morn­ing at Stir­ling Gar­dens.

In the ab­sence of Mr Whit­taker’s lawyer John Rando, a State rep­re­sen­ta­tive re­quested the mat­ter be ad­journed un­til next month for the homi­cide squad to pro­vide dis­clo­sure.

Mr Whit­taker will be re­manded in Hakea and reap­pear in Stir­ling Gar­dens on Septem­ber 26 for a men­tion only.

He is also due to ap­pear in Mid­land Mag­is­trates Court on Au­gust 24 over two steal­ing of­fences.
