Mur­der ac­cused fined over steal­ing of­fences

A SAWYERS Val­ley man who is due to face court next month over mur­der was fined last week for com­mit­ting steal­ing of­fences.

Matt Lewis Whit­taker ap­peared via video link in Mid­land Mag­is­trates Court on Fri­day charged with two counts of steal­ing, which he was fined for.

The 36-year-old re­manded in Hakea Prison has been ac­cused of us­ing a shovel to try mur­der a Fin­nish na­tional on July 28 near Paulls Val­ley on the Bibul­mun Track.

It is al­leged Mr Whit­taker hit a 33-year-old man from Fin­land with the car he was driv­ing be­fore hit­ting him with a shovel and caus­ing a sig­nif­i­cant head wound.

Mr Whit­taker was charged with at­tempt­ing to kill and ap­peared in the Mid­land Mag­is­trates Court in July. Mag­is­trate Martin Flynn ad­journed the mat­ter to Au­gust.

He reap­peared in front of Mag­is­trate Jan Whit­bread on Au­gust 8 at Stir­ling Gar­dens.

Mr Whit­taker has been re­manded in Hakea and is due to face the mur­der charge on Septem­ber 26.
