Community joins sports activities
The 10th annual Mullewa Rural Family Fun Day was held on March 10 with members of the community gathering to celebrate new faces as well as continue a long-standing sporting contest.
The event was first held in 2007 after the Shire of Mullewa received Drought Assistance Funding from the State Government.
The Shire decided to bring the rural community together for a day of sporting activities and to provide an opportunity for people to share the good and bad experiences they were going through.
The East versus West (of Mullewa townsite) cricket match began in 2006 and is now the main feature of the day.
The match has generated a fair amount of playful banter and rivalry among the rural community.
This year, Rural Family Fun Day was run by the Mullewa Community Group Inc. in conjunction with the Mullewa Sports Club and with administrative support from the City of Greater Geraldton’s Mullewa district office. Tennis coaching with Jarron Kretschmann from Sun City Tennis Academy was introduced this year made possible by the City of Greater Geraldton’s Community Grants Project Support Program and the Mullewa Tennis Club. The annual event provided a socialable opportunity before members of the farming community knuckle down to seeding.
