New pool hour boon for lap swimmers

Midwest Times - - NEWS - Geoff Vivian

Lap swimmers will be able to access Wiluna swimming pool an hour earlier after the council approved a change in opening hours.

A report from the pool’s operator Belgravia Leisure said manager Lester Ball advised that staying open after 6pm was not a “productive use of time”.

“To date, the pool has not been used by the community after 6pm, including when temperatures have reached 40C,” the report says.

“Adding an hour to the morning session, which is a time that is primarily patronised by low-risk users (lap swimmers), would provide more suitable time for Lester to complete his maintenance duties.

“Whilst these tasks could be completed after 6pm, there is a higher risk of a child wandering into the facility compared to the early morning, while Lester is distracted when he is cleaning, mowing the lawn, etc.” Cr Caroline Thomas moved a motion to change the opening. Cr Norma Ward seconded and all voted in favour. The new opening hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 5am-7am, 10am-noon and 1.30pm-6pm, weekends and public holidays from 9am-noon, 1.30pm-6pm and school holiday weekdays from 5am-7am, 10am-noon, 1.30pm-6pm. The pool is closed on Wednesdays.
