Tip upgrades to include recycling

Shark Bay Shire will encourage people taking their waste to Denham rubbish tip to dispose of it more carefully once a recycling facility is established.

Shire president Cheryl Cowell said the facility would also serve the shires of Exmouth and Carnarvon.

“The recycling won’t be a ‘pickup’ but ‘bring your recycling to the shire depot’, and we will have a glass-crusher, cardboard-baler, and shredder for metals,” she said.

“We are upgrading our tip with funding we got 12-18 months ago.”

Cr Cowell said the project had taken several years to negotiate.

“When the local government amalgamations were being proposed by the previous Liberal government, other groups could form regional collaborative groups,” she said.

“The distances would have meant amalgamation didn’t work, so we did form the Three Coastal Shires regional collaborative group.

“Our collaborative group was with Carnarvon and Exmouth, and one of the projects that came out of that was the regional recycling depot.”

At last month’s meeting, councillors authorised the Shire’s chief executive to approve the planning application after it had been advertised for public comment.

Public comment is open until December 8.
