Carnarvon grower slammed with $1200 water fine

Midwest Times - - NEWS -

A Carnarvon grower has been fined $1200 for unauthorised water use.

The WA Department of Water and Environmental Regulation prosecuted Domenico Condo and he was found guilty in Carnarvon Magistrate’s Court on October 22 of taking more water than permitted from the Gascoyne River.

The court was told Condo took 4551 kilolitres above his monthly entitlement for his Carnarvon property in September 2017.

DWER executive director Paul Brown said it was department practice to work with all licensees having difficulty complying with licence conditions before considering prosecution.

“The groundwater resources of the Gascoyne River are carefully managed to ensure all water users can access their licensed entitlements,” he said.

“Over-pumping can degrade the water resource for both the user and neighbours, which is why the department closely manages usage.

“The court’s decision recognises the importance of protecting the water security of all irrigators and the department’s role in managing the resource.”
