SCREEN SEAL

Mini Magazine - - Tech -

Q Can I use an earlier pre-MPi windscreen seal on my MPi Cooper? There is a lot of rust around the screen and I’ve been told that the MPi seal may have caused it. I’m having the car fully restored with a new scuttle and dash rail, so I don’t want to have to replace them again after a few years. Rocket A The short answer here is, yes you can. Aside from the early MkI Minis that didn’t have the screen seal recess around the screen aperture, the front screen panel has always been the same on all Minis. It was only the seal that was changed. Fitted to the Minis starting in the early 1990s, the wider seal was fitted in an attempt to reduce wind noise from the front screen area by smoothing out the extra ridge formed by using the earlier narrow seal, exposing the aperture recess ridge. The wider seal is renowned for being a water trap that causes extensive corrosion as you have experienced, though Rover’s distinct lack of paint didn’t help either!

Wider screen seals can trap moisture.
