Two Minis join the fleet, and the Mighty is almost ready.
What a difference a month makes, as I have not one but two new arrivals in my stable. First up is the ex- Ruggles Sidewalk you may have read about already. He hopes that I’ll have a change of heart and return it to the road, but what he fails to realise is that I don’t have a heart, and will probably be throwing a rollcage at it and taking it Mighty Mini racing. The plan is to build a spare car for myself, or should the demand be there, maybe even one to hire out.
Next up is a genuine garden find. I received a call from a lady who was moving house and needed a Mini moving that had spent the last 10 years languishing in her back garden. She was going to call the scrap man before finding my number, and as I couldn’t let it get crushed I agreed to buy it. I went to collect it a few days later, and what greeted me was a remarkably original Mk3 Mini 1000 with low mileage! OK, so it left most of its floorpan on the grass where it had stood and it’s almost certainly full of spiders and various other wildlife, but I reckon there’s a car underneath it all somewhere.
Despite all this, I’ve still found some time to do some work on the Mighty. I’ve repainted the shell, and my engine has come back from JW Engines with a fully refreshed cylinder head to solve the valve binding problems I was having at Cadwell last year, as well as a rebuilt diff to fix the massive oil leak that developed after Donington. The whole unit is now safely back in the car too, along with a full compliment of CV joints. These are a known weak point on Mightys, so it’s always worth starting a season on fresh ones. All that’s left to do is to refit everything else that had been removed for the respray, but you will have to wait until the next issue to see the final result. That’s unless you happen to be at Silverstone on March 25-26, where my teammate Greg and I will be going for the big reveal!
Saved from the crusher: Ryan has yet to decide the fate of this Mk3.
Well, at least it’s low mileage!
The Mighty’s refreshed engine and ‘box is back in place.
