Pay rises in sharing economy

Money Magazine Australia - - IN BRIEF -

Participants of the share economy may soon be able to look forward to better pay and working conditions. A landmark agreement was struck on May 1 between Unions NSW and the jobs marketplace app AirTasker to better align employment conditions with industry standards.

Mark Morey, secretary of Unions NSW, says the organisation is working with AirTasker to promote higher rates of pay, and will soon offer contractors an insurance product similar to workers’ compensation for workplace injuries and illness. Contractors are also being promised an independent dispute resolution process, which will be overseen by the Fair Work Commission.

“It doesn’t matter if work is arranged through an app or website. Fairness is what counts and it’s what we will fight for,” says Morey.
