Qantas Frequent Flyer versus Virgin Velocity
In the battle of the reward scheme Goliaths, Steve Hui of iFLYflat says the question of which reward scheme offers better value really depends on where you’re planning to travel. He cautions that even when points are redeemed to pay airline fares, the carrier will impose its own “carrier charges” (once called fuel surcharges). And for a long-haul trip, these charges plus departure taxes can add up to several hundred dollars.
Part of the problem in comparing Virgin and Qantas rewards programs is that the cost can escalate if you’re flying with a partner airline. “The carrier charges on Virgin flights are low, but if you’re using points to fly with a partner airline the taxes are a lot higher,” says Hui.
