KU-RING-GAI WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Monthly Chronicle - - News - CAITLAN CHARLES

Local netball legend, Brenda Williams, was filled with joy this week after being selected as Ku-ring-gai’s Women of the Year.

Member for Ku-ring-gai, Alister Henskens, said Williams’ name immediately came to mind when considering candidates for the Women of the Year Award.

During his speech at the ceremony on Canoon Road netball courts in Turramurra, Henskens praised Williams’ many years of devotion to netball in the area.

“Today we honour a lady whose name is synonymous with netball in Ku-ring-gai. Brenda Williams is being recognised for her 55 years of service and passion for the sport that she loves,” he said.

“I couldn’t think of anyone more worthy of the title Kur-ring-gai Women of the Year.”

NSW Minister for Women, Pru Goward, was also at the ceremony to present Williams with her award. The Minister said these awards were a way of acknowledging women who are often taken for granted.

“This is a way of really encouraging the community to think about what is it that women do, that we need to acknowledge. Can we think of women who have done wonderful things? And it starts a conversation,” said Minister Goward.

Minister Goward said it was very important that state and local levels of government contribute to the lives of women who had been significant achievers and role models.

Williams is Ku-ring-gai Netball Association’s longest serving member and she has been an integral part of the association.

“It is exciting to be nominated for anything, except the wooden spoon of course. But, it’s incredible to get this recognition, and maybe it will help someone else thinking ‘well that could be me, I could get that one day,’”she said.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, I must have driven them crazy.”

The Berowra local said the reward for dedicating her time came from seeing the young players achieve goals and grow as players.
