What do you do if you’re not in con­tact with your mum be­fore your baby ar­rives? “A new child isn’t a mag­i­cal cure,” says Rosjke. Wait un­til you’re past the six-month ‘baby co­coon’ stage, when your en­ergy is fo­cused on car­ing for your baby. Then you may feel able to work on heal­ing your re­la­tion­ship with your mum. If it’s be­yond re­pair, Rosjke says it may be help­ful to write her a let­ter ex­plain­ing how you feel. “But don’t send it,” she warns, “un­less you can cope with the con­se­quences.”
