GP DR LINDA CALABRESI SAYS: It sounds like you have chloasma (or melasma). This is a blotchy, brownish pigmentation that can be triggered by pregnancy. It is caused by the overproduction of the pigment melanin from melanocytes. Chloasma can also be triggered by the oral contraceptive pill and even sun exposure. In most cases, once the trigger is removed the pigmentation fades over a period of weeks. There are no quick fixes for chloasma, but treatments are available, so see your doctor if the patches persist.
