How to treat a nosebleed

Mother & Baby (Australia) - - Special Report -

When your tot is bleeding from the nose it can be a scary experience. Soothe him, as crying can make the bleeding worse.

Apply pressure to the nostrils with your index finger and thumb to stop blood flow. Ensure he is sitting up and leaning forward as you apply pressure. Keep holding the nostrils for 10 minutes – don’t relieve the pressure to see if the bleeding has stopped. Repeat this process; most nosebleeds will stop between 10 and 20 minutes after pressure has been applied.

If the bleeding has stopped, ensure he doesn’t pick his nose or have steamy baths or showers for the next 24 hours.

If the bleeding continues, take him to the GP or emergency, where the bleeding can be stemmed with an ointment or dressing.
