I had the time of my life at the 2016 Mother & Baby Awards! I flew to Sydney from WA with my mum, Leah, and the trip was unlike anything I’d ever imagined. From the minute we stepped off the plane, we were treated like royalty. Everyone was so lovely and kind – the sweetest of all being event host Natalie Bassingthwaighte! She is one incredible lady, and so gorgeous. She gave me and Mum some selfie tips, which became essential to get through our Sydney trip, and told us all about her children and her clothing brand, Chi Khi. It felt like a dream to meet her. When she handed me that enormous winner’s cheque, I just couldn’t believe it. I was so nervous to give my speech, but it was just so special to be recognised as worthy of this honour.
This has been a brilliant opportunity to share my story and encourage other women to self-check their breasts. After my speech, sponsors and award category winners came over to congratulate me, offering all kinds of products. The most special offer came from Babies”R”Us – even though I’d requested to share my $5000 voucher prize with the other four finalists, they offered to still honour the original $5000 just for me and my kids! I burst into tears at such mind-boggling generosity. Shortly afterwards, I met representatives from Paradise Resort who offered me a week-long holiday on the Gold Coast. I just couldn’t believe it and could not stop crying with happiness. I still feel like the luckiest girl in the world!

As part of my whirlwind trip to Sydney, the Mother & Baby team organised an appearance on Today Extra. We arrived early at Channel 9, where they promptly ushered me into the make-up room. I couldn’t believe it – sitting next to me again was Natalie Bassingthwaighte! She gave me some great advice on how to relax before my appearance on live television and we both got bright-pink lips done in honour of Bright Pink Lipstick Day.
I watched with anticipation while Nat was on the show before me. I couldn’t believe it when they called my name to sit in the chair! There, across the desk in front of me, in all their bright, bubbly, beaming glory, were David Campbell and Sonia Kruger. They made me feel so calm and welcome, even though I was filled with butterflies. Sonia told me I was beautiful; I swooned! Nat was right – it was just like chatting in your living room with old friends, except I made sure I sat up straight. It was all over in the blink of an eye, then we had a quick photo in the ad break.
It was such a remarkable trip with so many exciting opportunities, and I made so many fabulous new friends. Thank you,
Mother & Baby and Babies”R”Us, for making this all come true!
