Q Could my newborn catch anything from our pet dog? A Dr Mike Starr, paediatrician

says: The chances of catching an infection from a pet dog are very low, and this applies to newborns as well. If a dog is healthy and receives regular preventive treatment for fleas and worms, the risk is particularly low. Dogs should never be left alone with babies or young children in case they scratch or bite – this may happen accidentally.
