YOU CHILD WANTS AN APPLE. YOU ONLY HAVE BANANAS. NOW HE’S GOING BANANAS. WHAT TO DO?
A Get a toy to ‘eat’ the banana and see if your toddler wants to share some. B Text your mum begging her to drop around some apples ASAP. C Tell him snack time is over. He had his chance – now he can wait until lunch.
YOUR BEST OPTION: A
Often your toddler doesn’t know what he wants; he just wants the opposite of what’s available. “He may be tired or hungry, so don’t cancel snack time,” says Dr Lynda Shaw. “Distract him by offering a new choice, such as helping to peel a banana for his favourite toy.” Avoid going to the shop to buy apples as this will start a relationship based on manipulation.
