New BMW Z4 teased

Sports roadster returns to its roots

Motor (Australia) - - THE NEWS -

BMW’s Z4 is returning to its roots as a back-to-basics, soft-top roadster focused on driving thrills. The Z4 Concept, revealed ahead of this year’s Pebble Beach concours, previews the new styling direction, however, BMW provided next to no details regarding the car’s mechanical make-up.

Thankfully, MOTOR’s European sleuth Georg Kacher can help join the dots. Co-developed with the new Toyota Supra as part of a sports car joint venture between the two makers, ditching the heavy folding hardtop will keep weight down to between 1350-1430kg depending on the variant.

Three engines are expected to be offered, a 147kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo four s20i, the same engine in 180kW/380Nm guise for the s30i and a 250kW/450Nm 3.0-litre turbo six for the range-topping M40i. Sadly, no M version is expected due to the modifications required pushing the price too high.

Set for a 2018 production debut, prices are still some way from being finalised, but there is a desire to keep them in the same ballpark as the outgoing Z4.

The flashy details will be toned down a little, but essentially you’re looking at the new Z4, set to be revealed in 2018
