TOYOTA’S SURPRISE 735kW HYPERCAR
TOYOTA pulled a 1000hp rabbit out of its hat at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon by revealing the GR Super Sport Concept, a sleek supercar based on its TS050 Hybrid Le Mans racer.
Concrete details are few and sadly it’s not intended for production, instead merely a tantalising taste of the next-generation of Toyota sports cars, which it seems are likely to lean heavily on hybridisation using lessons learned in LMP1 racing.
At the heart of the GR Super Sport – GR standing for Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsport arm – is a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 with hybrid all-wheel drive producing a combined 735kW. No performance figures are claimed, however, Toyota’s LMP1 racer can hit 200km/h in around five seconds.
Gazoo Racing president Shigeki Tomoyama said: “I hope the GR Super Sport will give you a taste of what we aim to achieve with our next-generation sports cars.”
Will Toyota build a road-going GR Super Sport? We sure hope so!
