03 MUSTANG MACH 1 GENERATIONS

Motor (Australia) - - FRONT END | PACE NOTES -

1. 1969 MACH 1: THE ORIGINAL

The 1969 model year of the original generation Mustang had engines ranging from Windsor and Cleveland 351 (5.8litre) V8s, to the massive 427 (7.0-litre). Broke 295 speed and endurance records and won SCCA Manufacturer’s Rally Championships in 1969 and 1970.

2. 1974 MACH 1: ‘MUSTANG II’

Though there was a facelift for the first-gen Mustang, this is technically the second generation and thus Mach 1 Mk2. Not as well-loved or well-remembered, the ‘II’ was built on the Pinto platform as a downsize. The Mach 1 could be had with a V6 or a 4.9-litre V8, but was discontinued in ‘78.

3. 2003 MACH 1: ‘NEW EDGE’

After the 2001 Bullitt, Ford must have realised old things were cool again, bringing back the retro-inspired Mach 1 for the ‘New Edge’ generation Mustang. As a bridge between the GT and Cobra models, the Mach 1 came with a few different versions of Ford’s 4.6-litre modular V8.
