Giro Chamber II £129.99

-

Giro’s evolved Chambers combine a rearward cleat position with efficient pedalling performance and a secure, protective fit to make them standout hardcore shoes. The shallow hex-tread Vibram sole has been spaced out on the secondgeneration shoes and they’re now surefooted in all but the sloppiest conditions. Unclipped grip on platform-style pedals is good too, thanks to the wide forefoot. Guide slopes give easy clipless exit/entry, and the cleat slots are further in and back than on most shoes. This mimics the more centralised, further outboard foot position of flat pedals for better balance in hectic situations. It also improves chainstay clearance on bikes with wider Boost back ends. There’s just enough adjustment to get a conventional cleat position if it feels weird biomechanically too. The sole is thin enough for a well-connected feel but the shoes are efficiently rigid for sprinting out of corners or tapping out long climbs. Updated versions will be appearing in shops soon, which will be stiffer still and will also have a longer wrap-over strap to improve the already secure fit. The wide camo-print sole and toe bumper fend off knocks nicely, and the collar is well padded. There are fewer seams on the upper to let water in or clog up with muck. They’re still the heaviest shoes on test though. If you had the previous Chambers, you’ll need to go up a size due to the snugger fit. www.zyrofisher.co.uk
