60 Seconds with... JOHN OLDALE

Mountain Biking UK - - UPLIFT -

Tall, tattooed and friendly, John Oldale is a familiar face in the UK bike industry. Like many of his peers, he raced downhill in the ’90s and spent winters working in bike shops to fund summer seasons in Morzine and Whistler. After blagging a job with a New Zealand bike brand, he spent seven years in the southern hemisphere, before returning to work as Fox’s European MTB marketing manager. These days John heads up all things marketing-related for Marin Bikes. His keen eye for style and talent has resulted in him hooking up some of the UK’s hottest up-and-comers.

Who is John Oldale? A whisky-loving dad who loves adventures on his bike.

What’s your job title? International Marketing Manager for Marin Bikes.

Where do you call home?

A small village just outside of Marlborough.

What was your first bike?

Some random BMX from my next-door neighbour.

Current go-to bike? For the last year I’ve been on a Marin Rift Zone, with a few modifications.

What gets you excited to ride?

Rad people and fun trails.

Favourite rider to watch?

Rémi Thirion, Kaos Seagrave or Kade Edwards.

Best trail you’ve ridden this year?

‘The First One’ into ‘Flow Trail’ at Bikepark Innsbruck.

Scariest thing you’ve done on a bike?

Riding over a random arch in Moab, Utah, with a 500ft drop on one side, when it was pretty windy. It made for a sweet photo though!

Worst crash you’ve had? Riding some jungle trails in NZ, I went over the bars and KO’d myself. I woke up to a face of blood and a lot of pain. I thought I’d pushed my nose into my head and started freaking out, because I knew that, due to the location, there was no chance of getting rescued. After my mates had calmed me down, I realised I’d put my teeth through my top lip and broken my nose. Let’s just say it was a long push out.

Clips or flats?

Flats – is there another option?

650b or 29in? 29.

Bike park flow or natural gnar?

Natural gnar.

Race results or Instagram followers? Personality – neither of the above are worth anything without it.

Who’d you rather fight… Richie Rude or Brook Macdonald?

I have a pretty funny story as to why it’s definitely not Brook, but it’s probably not suitable for print!

Who’d be your dream sponsor? Vans.

How far can your wheelie?

A solid 25ft.

What would be your desert island luxury? Spotify.

What advice would you give your 13-year-old self?

Work on your wheelies!

What would you be doing if you weren’t working for Marin? Something skiing-related.
