Specialized Butcher BLCK DMND 2Bliss Ready 29x2.3in tyre £50

Mountain Biking UK - - WRECKED & RATED -

Specialized’s new vowel-flouting ‘BLCK DMND’ casings are a compromise between a DH and trail carcass. They combine reinforced sidewalls, for puncture protection, with thinner rubber under the tread, to keep weight and suppleness in check. As well as using this new casing, the latest Butcher is wider and has a tweaked tread design. Our 29x2.3in test tyre measured 2.35in across at 25psi (versus 2.2in for the old version) and weighed 1,119g. On the trail, it has a muted and well-damped feel over rocks and roots. The tread clears nicely in mud and resists squirm at low pressures, and grip is impressive in a range of conditions. It’s noticeably slower-rolling than Schwalbe’s marketleading Magic Mary ADDIX Ultra Soft though, offers slightly less traction in loose soil and doesn’t feel quite as comfy in the rough. It’s a really good tyre, but still not our favourite. Seb www.specialized.com
