Traditional Italian at newest restaurant

OVER summer bets were on as to whether the new YHA building (Buller Central) would be finished in time for winter 2013.

I have to say the building exceeds my expectations and the two eating venues, Oli’s Kitchen and the Powder Bar are certainly worth visiting.

New manager Stewart Hogg explained that this season, YHA is pacing itself.

“We want to get it right, so our menus are limited but our food is really delicious and we have young, friendly funloving staff,” he said.

The warm and inviting, ground level Powder Bar is open to the public and offers a small but very tempting menu including pizza, focaccia, coffee and cakes.

Upstairs, Oli’s stateof-the-art, commercial kitchen, serves YHA inhouse guests tasty, wholesome and authentic Italian home cooking.

Visitors can book for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, but judging by comments about the great food, reservations may be difficult.

Chef Mattia is an Italian from Canazei, a ski resort in the Dolomites.

Last season he worked at Snow Pony and this year has moved to Oli’s Kitchen.

His assistant Monica is from Abruzzo in central Italy and both love cooking Italian specialties for mountain visitors.

This year the menu is simple but appetising with Zuppa (soup) of the day, Antipasto selections and five pizza selections.

The pasta selection emphasises wonderful fresh ingredients with the Genovese a real winner – basil, parsley, olive oil, nuts and pinenuts.

Monica’s favorite though, is pasta alla bolognese and Mattia just loves his spicy salami pizza with fresh tomato and cheese.

Both Mattia and Monica love travelling in Australia.

They explored Western Australia last summer and plan to visit central and eastern Australia this summer before returning to Mt Buller for the 2014 snow season.

Oli’s Kitchen does open to the public on Friday and Saturday evenings, if they have space.

The dining area seats approximately 60 and the YHA itself has 80 beds, so if you’re lucky, you may be able to reserve a spot to enjoy a genuine Italian dining experience.

SERVING UP TREATS: Mattia and Monica are in the kitchen at Oli’s - first floor of Buller Central serving geniune Italian food fare.
