BUMPS Ski and Surf was established in March 1982 and over the past 35 years has proven to be a stayer in the ski industry and pioneering innovative new technology; setting the standard for others to follow.

March 15, 1982 may seem a long time ago, however, it was on that day Peter and Glenda Haley opened the doors on Bumps Ski and Sport (now called Bumps Ski and Surf), at 465 Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick.

Their goal was to develop and maintain a growing ski and sport retail business; providing the highest possible level of customer service in the industry.

Their motto “the right product for the right reason, no exceptions” still rings true, with their highly trained staff always advising what is best for the individual.

Peter and Glenda’s dedication to customer needs, continual product renewal and innovation has shone through everything they have done.

For this they have been rewarded with a continually expanding customer base.

By 1987 the original, overcrowded premises were expanded to next door (467) doubling their floor space.

The year 2000 saw the implementation of GST, skiing before Queen’s Birthday weekend and a further business expansion, necessitating taking over a fourth shop - number 461.

Due to the huge success of the snow and surf area of the business, it was decided to change the name to Bumps Ski and Surf focusing primarily on these areas.

This growth trend has continued; five years ago the shop moved to a custom designed space at 481 Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick – where it now stands.

Bumps were pioneers within the ski industry introducing many ideas that have been adopted across the board such as Boot Fit Guarantee and extended winter trading hours (to allow for easier ski rental).

It has also led to many new ideas such as the Annual Kids’ Recycle Sale and the Annual Race Exhibition – both of which are widely attended.

This year Bumps celebrates the 21st anniversary of Kids Recycle Sale.

To deliver the best possible service Bumps runs lots of staff training; constantly has new boot fitters being trained, including boot fitters doing stints overseas to work in and learn from some of the best boot fitting stores in the world.

Due to this dedication to boot fitting Bumps was the first Australian store included on the ‘America’s best Boot fitters’ website.

Twenty years ago Bumps’ website was first released taking Bumps onto the national scene.

Bumps’ policy of continual modernisation has led to the same level of innovation seen in their industry-leading shop policies.

Bumps was one of the first to introduce the exclusive Wintersteiger factory finish ski and snowboard tuning service to metropolitan Melbourne and the first in the world to take delivery of the Montana Infrared Race Waxer machine.

Bumps’ dedication to their customer needs, innovation and quality customer service has allowed for a high level of growth over the past 35 years - a trend that will hopefully continue into the future.

At Bumps you will always get the right product, for the right person, as it is the customer that is most important.

Bumps is a family owned and family run business that will always be there for families and individuals to get the best possible service, products and experience.

Showing Glenda and Peter’s passion and dedication to the industry, Bumps is the only Snowsports store in Melbourne still run by the store’s original owners.

Bumps is continually grateful to their customer base for their loyal support over the years – none of this would have been possible without them.

“Bumps will maintain continued growth through attention to customer needs together with innovation and quality customer service,” Peter said.

“Above all else we are grateful to you, our valued customer, for your loyal support over the years - thank you.”

GOING STRONG: Peter and Glenda Haley outside their current Bumps Ski and Surf outlet in Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick.
