Master the mountain with MountainSafe
MOUNTAINSAFE caters for the growing number of people venturing into the backcountry.
MountainSafe offers snow safety and backcountry awareness programs to ensure skiers and snowboarders ride safe and have fun in off piste terrain.
Delivered in collaboration with ski patrol and some of the world’s best winter sport athletes, the 3.5 hour session will include in-class and onsnow training.
The session will cover:
45min classroom type presentation covering preride prep;
Snowpack assessment and decision making;
Safe movement and riding in avalanche areas;
Hands-on, on-snow avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe training;
Freeride first aid in case something goes wrong. Who is it for? MountainSafe is for anyone who is interested in furthering their riding by venturing off piste within resort boundaries, the side country and backcountry.
Whether it is in the Australian alpine environment or overseas, the message is simple: if you don’t know, don’t go.
Make sure you’re prepared this winter.
MountainSafe sessions will be held throughout the 2017 season at Mt Buller Alpine Resort, with a pilot session to be held at Thredbo Resort.
Each session will run for 3.5 hours starting at 9am.
The first session this year is Sunday, July 9.
Custom sessions can be organised on request with a minimum of four participants required to run a session. MountainSafe will provide an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe to use on the day of the course - you will need: ski or snowboard gear; a valid resort lift ticket.
The cost of the session is $195 per person (this cost does not include the cost of your lift ticket).
Every MountainSafe session helps fund local community and alpine environment initiatives to care for our environment and each other.
Interested participants can sign up at www.mountainsafe.org.
Legendary big mountain snowboarder, Protect Our Winters founder and MountainSafe ambassador Jeremy Jones will visit Mt Buller on July 21-24 to present his latest movie at the Mt Buller Cinema and engage in a Q&A on the evening with the public.
He will also be attending similar events in Thredbo.
With a constant stream of freeride content at our fingertips, the inspiration to explore and push ourselves has never been stronger.
We seek the untracked and an opportunity to push the boundaries, but with this comes responsibility.
‘Don’t know, don’t go’ is a saying we live by and MountainSafe founder Tony Harrington knows it all too well.
Having worked alongside some of the world’s best big mountain and freeride skiers and boarders, Tony is acutely aware of the need to monitor the changing landscape.
While travelling and working abroad, Tony noticed an increase in the number of Australians searching out steeper and deeper terrain and often with little understanding of the hazards that riding big terrain can incur.
The program has been developed with the input and support of world class athletes and guides, Teton Gravity Research, legendary big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones and Ski Patrol.
Coupled with the launch of BULLER X (Mt Buller based freeride ski and snowboard competition), the timing is perfect to launch MountainSafe.
The aim of MountainSafe is simple: to arm you with the skills and tools needed to stay safe in the side or backcountry of resorts in Australia and overseas.
The half-day session will cover the essential topics such as: snow pack assessment and decision making, probe and shovel use, terrain awareness, use of avalanche transceiver, companion rescue and basic first aid.
The MountainSafe program will be offered at Mt Buller this winter and there is great interest in taking it to other resorts, so stay tuned for updates.
