Big weekend on the horizon
THERE is a feast of high quality racing for Sydney punters and race fans over the June long weekend.
Royal Randwick kicks off three days of racing in the metropolitan area with the feature Saturday meeting, supported by a Kembla Grange provincial program.
The holiday Monday raceday is at Rosehill Racecourse.
What makes this long weekend different is the Hawkesbury Sunday, June 6, meeting featuring the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.
Hawkesbury’s premier stand-alone meeting was washed out on May 2 but the Hawkesbury Race Club and Racing NSW determined to reschedule the club’s three Group 3 races.
The Darley Crown and Hawkesbury Guineas were added to the Rosehill meeting on May 9 and the Hawkesbury Gold Cup has been moved to this Sunday. MAGIC IN THE AIR ROYAL Randwick’s Saturday meeting features the Listed June Stakes and the Stayers Cup. The June Stakes - run over 1100m - is the likely target for winter sprint find Alberto Magic.
The Allan Denhamtrained Alberto Magic has been brilliant, winning at Rosehill and Randwick, and improving his race record to six wins from just 10 starts.
The Stayers Cup is run over 3200m and is one of only two races run over the marathon trip in Sydney each season. The other race is the Sydney Cup.
Premier trainer Chris Waller dominates Sydney’s staying races and he is priming Our Voodoo Prince for the Stayers Cup. BEASLEY BRILLIANT MY TIP for Randwick on Saturday is to follow jockey Danny Beasley who is in brilliant form since returning from a seven-year stint in Singapore.
