It (access to pools) was always free for pensioners until the last budget, when we introduced that fee and watched attendance drop from 50,000 pensioners to 10-20,000.

Cr Siljeg said the money would be better spent on infrastructure than to be given away.
“Let’s face it, $95 is a very small amount for one person,” he said.
“But give that away to every pensioner and it could mean we have six roads less we can do a year and 60 roads less we can do over 10 years.
“I think pensioners and many more residents benefit when we look after infrastructure, and maybe if council spends money wisely we can offer better discounts on things.”
The detailed budget report went to committee last night and will be considered by the council next week.
