The tax on alcopops has significantly reduced the number of highly intoxicated young people presenting to hospital emergency departments and helped curb binge drinking, research has found. The University of NSW research has found a significant drop in the presentations of drunken people aged from 14-18 after the tax on sugary ready-to-drink beverages was introduced in 2008. There were 1350 fewer presentations for young women and 514 for young men between 1997 and 2011.
