Rob dives into 40th festivities

Mt Druitt - St Mary's Standard (East) - - NEWS -

PLANS are under way to celebrate Mt Druitt Pool’s 40th birthday with celebrations set to stretch throughout the next swim season.

Getting into the spirit early was Whalan resident Rob Buckwell, who has closely followed the campaign to save the pool.

Public pressure forced Blacktown Council to reopen the pool for a trial season after it was shut for 18 months for not being “financially viable”.

Mr Buckwell recalls a similar campaign he led to build support for the pool at its inception.

While serving on Blacktown Council between 1974 and 1977 as an alderman (now known as councillor), Mr Buckwell made it his mission to convince the council to accept responsibility of the pool gifted by the state government.

The pool will reopen on September 19 and a big birthday bash will be held in December.

Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali has called on residents to send in their old photos and stories related to the popular swimming centre.

Submissions will be turned into artworks that will go on display at the pool entrance.
