It is easy to see why opinions are so divided over a public space such as Dawson Mall. You have your business owners who place their very livelihood on making a good go of it. They should not be “used to” cleaning urine from their doorways, having their shopfronts graffitied and their stock stolen or, even worse, set alight. They say it is mostly teenagers causing them grief so it gives some merit to calls from Street University to give our youth things to do. Boredom doesn’t excuse disgusting behaviour but maybe it somehow explains it. Perhaps the proposal for a permanent basketball hoop in the mall could be a feature in the proposed $1.6 million neighbourhood park.
