Gateway sign’s return to glory
THE arched sign that once straddled the entrance of Minchinbury Winery Gateway will be restored and returned to the historic vineyard.
The $80,000 restoration of the sign and the main entry gate was approved by Blacktown Council last week.
The vineyard has been credited for starting Austra- lia’s sparkling wine industry, after William Minchin was granted land in the area since named after him.
In 1859 it was turned into a vineyard and cellar and Penfolds bought the land in 1912.
Future works for building a park on the land are expected to cost $220,000, and may include a children’s playground.
