Revamp plan fight heats up
PETITION OPPOSES CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT
COMMUNITY groups that use Rooty Hill Leisure Centre have signed an online petition opposing the site’s redevelopment.
The petition was posted on Facebook by social basketball coach Erwyn Bolina last Tuesday, and by Wednesday it had more than 400 signatures.
The petition came after a proposal to redevelop the leisure centre into a new YMCA and turn May Cowpe Reserve into three fields for Hockey NSW.
Father-of-four Orlando “Bhoyet” Vista has played basketball at the leisure centre for 15 years and said if the YMCA’s proposal gets approved, they will be left without nowhere to go.
“We’ve already looked around – most places are fully booked,” Mr Vista said.
The YMCA’s proposal does not allow for the social basketball groups to continue, and other community groups are now afraid they will not be able to use the facility either.
Rose Acosta has been using one of the leisure centre’s courts three nights a week to run her Viggers Volleyball training and has signed the Facebook petition.
“We regularly book volleyball on that court on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday,” Ms Acosta said.
“If they change it to hockey, we won’t be able to get the bookings.”
Ms Acosta also uses the centre to rehearse with her dance group 3D Reborn.
Zumba instructor Rudi Yap said he was concerned that even if he kept his booking, the fee would be increased when the YMCA moved in. “I may not be able to use the venue or they may increase the rent,” Mr Yap said.
The proposal will be on public exhibition until July 31.
Bhoyet Vista and sons Jarrel, 11, and Latrel, 13, will be sorry to see the Rooty Hill Leisure Centre close.
